Does being civilized matter?

This question comes after watching the film The Purge & a few prank videos on YouTube. It made me wonder where the line between so-called civilized & uncivilized behaiviour should be drawn.

Being "civilized" to me is the concept of respecting other people, it is understanding that other people deserve to be treated with some form of respect. You'd think this is standard in most places around the world because if it weren't, not much would be left standing & everything would be torn to the ground. Little public infrastructure would be spared or not vandalised some way or another if there was no need to be civilized. A leader would try build something for the community & people would tear it to the ground. Would the leaders themselves be given any titles or would they be a number like the rest? Authority would be rejected by the people, all sorts of depravity would be standard in such an uncivilized society. No one would listen to authority, it would literally be every man, woman or child for themselves. Such a society would have no authority figures, respected public figures, role models or any leaders. In such a society, you could kill anyone if you pleased. The problem is you'd always have to watch your back because you could die just by looking at someone. Is this a world anyone would want to live in?

Being civilized is a trait many see as unimportant in recent times but is the alternative really better? If anarchy reigned, who would be left standing?
